Adoptionism

Adoptionism

This is a 2nd century heresy that completely denied the Deity of Christ and presented Christ as a mere man whom God adopted for his obedience to become His son. This adoption is said to have occurred during Jesus' baptism, resurrection or even at his ascension.

Adoptionists teach that Jesus was rewarded by God by being adopted into the Godhead because of His submission and subordination to God. During His ministry on earth he was given supernatural powers to perform miracles and as a test He passed and therefore was vindicated by God through the adoption as a Son of God. It is uncertain when this adoption took place but the vast majority of them say that it took place during baptism when God Spoke from heaven and affirmed that Jesus was His son.

This heresy was condemned at the first council of Nicea 325 AD.

CONCLUSION

Adoptionism denies the preexistence of Christ and also His Deity. The incarnate Word is God come in the flesh, He has neither beginning nor end, He simply IS (John 1:1).Col 2:9 ” For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

Joh 17:24 “for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.” How could the Father love the Son before the foundation of the world when the son did not exist? If This Love existed before the foundation of the world then how can we say it started sometime when Jesus was baptized?

Soli Deo Gloria
