The Sovereignty of God

The Sovereignty of God

By the Sovereignty of God we mean the Godhood of God and His supremacy above everything else. A.W. Pink said that “to say that God is Sovereign is to say that He is God“. A God who is not Sovereign is not God. God is the supreme being who governs the universe. “He does according to His will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth, so that none can stay His hand or say unto Him what doest Thou?” (Daniel 4:35). No demon can move an inch except He allows it to happen; He governs all matter and space, visible and invisible creatures.

“God is not affected by anything that happens outside of Himself” A.W. Pink.

God's Sovereignty is also visible in His creation; He created the universe and everything in it ex nihilo (out of nothing). “He only is Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords” (1Tim. 6:15). He is Sovereign over inanimate matter and over the children of man (Job 38:11). Both good and bad angels are subjected to Him. Kings and rulers are His subjects and He is the one who sets up one and brings down another, Psa 75:6-7. No one has ever given Him counsel or advised Him on a certain matter but yet His knowledge is unattainable.

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.” Romans 11:36

Sovereign Over Salvation

God is sovereign over Salvation (Heb 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith ;). Salvation is a work began by God and He will finish it according to His will, Phil. 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:” “Salvation is of the Lord” (Jon 2:9). It is neither attained nor merited by any creature except to whom it is given, salvation neither depends or rests upon human free will but on the power of the Sovereign God.

Human Responsibility

The Sovereignty of God does not exclude human responsibility. God is not to be blamed for the actions of sinful humanity, He ordains all things that comes to pass but He Himself is free from all evil and sin that man commits. Human beings are rational creatures and they have a will; that is they are capable of choosing between good and evil. But the nature of that will is not sovereign but is subjective to the sovereignty of God. If the will of man was free, in that even God could not rule over it, then God would not be sovereign. But man is a creature, subject to the will and decrees of God. That means human beings also cannot move an inch except the Lord allows it to happen.

Conclusion

As Christians, the sovereignty of God brings a great comfort to our hears. The one who holds the universe is the one who called us to saving grace and it pleased Him in eternity past to Save us despite our sins and failures.

Soli Deo Gloria
